Data & Sources

Where the facts on this site come from, and the terms under which we use them.

01

Our own words

Every text on this site is written by us. Where we rely on an official source for a fact, we state it in our own words and list the source with the article.

02

Heritage listings

Names of World Heritage properties, years of inscription and the size of protected areas come from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Facts about living traditions, such as Arabic coffee, harees, Al Sadu, Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, Alardah, Alheda'a and Khawlani coffee, come from the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists, including the year each element was listed and the countries that nominated it.

We state these facts in our own words and do not reproduce UNESCO's descriptive texts or photographs.

03

Official open data and statistics

Where we use a dataset from the Saudi national open data portal or an official statistics body, the article names the dataset, the publishing authority and the release date, and we follow the licence stated on that dataset.

Population and density figures for the thirteen regions are the 2022 figures published on DataSaudi, the Ministry of Economy and Planning's data platform. Geography, governorates and landmarks of each region come from Saudipedia, the national encyclopedia of the Ministry of Media. Where the two disagree, or a figure is unclear, we leave it out.

Facts about Vision 2030 come from the official Vision document published on vision2030.gov.sa. Royal orders, such as those establishing Founding Day and Flag Day, are cited as published by the Saudi Press Agency. Museum and heritage-village facts come from Saudipedia.

The national and regional dishes are those named by the Culinary Arts Commission of the Ministry of Culture, as announced by the Saudi Press Agency. Date export and production figures come from the National Center for Palms and Dates.
