Flag Day, 11 March

Green, with the Shahada in white and a sword beneath it: the flag King Abdulaziz approved in 1937.

The flag

The Saudi flag is green. In its centre the Shahada, "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah", is written in white Thuluth script, with a drawn sword beneath it, parallel to the text. Its width is two-thirds of its length.

The Shahada stands for the message of peace and Islam on which the state was founded; the sword for strength and pride. Together, the flag stands for national unity, monotheism, justice, growth and prosperity.

The day

King Abdulaziz approved the flag in its current form on 27 Dhu al-Hijjah 1355 AH, 11 March 1937. By Royal Order No. A/303 dated 9/8/1444 AH, announced on 1 March 2023, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud made 11 March of every year a day dedicated to the flag, under the name Flag Day.
