The performance
Almezmar is performed in Saudi Arabia by members of the Hijazi community, by anywhere from about 15 to 100 performers in long white garments. Drums signal the start.
Two rows face each other. The leader of each row claps and sings, the first row repeats the song with strong clapping, and the second row answers in turn.
The sticks
Two performers at a time step into the centre and twirl large sticks in quick, graceful moves, sometimes around a fire or other objects, before the next two take their place. Local craftspeople make both the drums and the sticks.
Almezmar is performed at family and national celebrations, religious holidays and official events. Performing troupes and heritage centres pass it on to the young, and women take part in making the costumes. UNESCO listed it in 2016.
