Saudi Green Initiative, trees, reserves and a net-zero date

Launched in 2021, the initiative ties emissions cuts, afforestation and land and sea protection to fixed targets.

Three targets

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched the Saudi Green Initiative in March 2021 as part of Vision 2030. It works on three fronts: reducing emissions, afforestation and land regeneration, and protecting land and sea.

By 2030 it aims to cut emissions by more than 278 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year, protect 30% of the Kingdom's land and sea, and plant more than 600 million trees. The longer horizon is net zero by 2060, with ten billion trees and forty million hectares of land rehabilitated over the coming decades.

Initiatives and a national day

More than 85 initiatives have been launched or activated since 2021, backed by investment of more than SAR 700 billion. The first Saudi Green Initiative Forum was held in Riyadh on 23 October 2021.

On 19 March 2024 the Council of Ministers designated 27 March as Saudi Green Initiative Day, marking the date of the initiative's launch each year.
