An instrument you make yourself
The semsemiah is a popular harp-like instrument. Its body is fixed to three wooden poles that form a triangle.
Players usually build it themselves, from natural or recycled materials such as wood or metal.
Where it is played
It is tied closely to the sea and is played on boats for entertainment. In Saudi Arabia sailors are among its keepers. It also turns up at concerts, holidays, weddings, football matches, cultural festivals and community gatherings.
Makers and players are of every age and background. Most learn informally, in families and communities or from bands and master players, often starting around the age of eight. In Saudi Arabia the internet and social media have become popular ways to learn. UNESCO listed the semsemiah in 2024, with Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
