King Salman Park, a city's old runway handed back as green space

More than sixteen square kilometres on the site of Riyadh's old airport, planned around arts, sport and open land.

From airfield to park

King Salman launched the park on 19 March 2019 on the site of the old Riyadh Airport, north of the city centre. It covers more than 16 km², about seven times the size of London's Hyde Park, and is supervised by the King Salman Park Foundation, whose board is chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Five Green Line and one Red Line station of the Riyadh Metro serve the site, along with ten bus stations and six main roads.

What is planned

The Royal Arts Complex, designed by the late Ricardo Bofill, will hold a National Theatre of 2,300 seats, an outdoor amphitheatre and a library of more than 250,000 books. A visitor centre by David Adjaye covers 90,000 m².

Sport takes up much of the rest: a royal golf course of 850,000 m², an aquapark, an equestrian centre, a skydiving centre and running and cycling routes. The plan also includes about 12,000 homes and sixteen hotels.
