Between the Gulf and the sands
Al-Ahsa lies in the east of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by the Gulf to the east, the Ad-Dahna desert to the west and the Empty Quarter, Ar-Rub' Al-Khali, to the south.
With about 2.5 million date palms, UNESCO describes it as the largest oasis in the world. Human settlement here has been continuous from the Neolithic period to the present day.
What you will see
The listed landscape is made of twelve parts: gardens, canals, springs, wells and a drainage lake, together with historic buildings, an old urban fabric and archaeological sites.
Fortresses, mosques, wells and canals still stand as evidence of how water was managed here over the centuries. UNESCO inscribed the oasis in 2018 as an evolving cultural landscape.
